Following heavy rain and flooding, authorities have issued evacuation advisories for parts of several cities in Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Fukuoka and Shiga prefectures. Several rivers are reportedly overflowing and the severe weather has affected train services, including the suspension of the Sanyo Shinkansen (Osaka-Fukuoka) train line.

Yoshiro Fukuma, regional security expert at International SOS and Control Risks said, “We’re advising travellers to postpone travel if itineraries are flexible.  Travellers in affected areas should reconfirm transportation bookings and have contingency plans for travel.  Disruption to essential services, such as electricity supplies, is possible due to heavy rainfall and strong winds. Charge all communication devices and, where feasible, keep extra batteries for back-up.”

Advisories from regional authorities should be closely monitored and followed, and travellers should be prepared to change travel plans on short notice.

For the latest information and advice, members are advised to register for email alerts and review the travel security updates on Travel Security Online and through the International SOS Membership Portal.
