Taal Volcano Philippines

14 January 2020 ,  —

London

Taal Volcano in Batangas province in the Philippines erupted on 12 January 2020. It released a thick ash cloud that initially travelled as far as Manila before being carried west by a change in wind direction. The eruption has caused significant disruption in Batangas, and southern Cavite provinces.

There remains a potential for imminent additional eruption and currently an 14km exclusion zone remains in place around the crater area.Katherine O’Reilly comments, “We are continuously monitoring the area around the Taal Volcano as it is a recognised volatile location. With this eruption, the main issue currently is the thick volcanic ash, which can have serious health impacts. Ash can cause localised symptoms such as itchy eyes, runny nose, sore throat and cough.

Most people only experience temporary symptoms but the effects may be more pronounced in people with underlying health conditions, particularly respiratory problems such as bronchitis, emphysema or asthma. We continue to support clients through information, analysis and evacuation assistance and are closely monitoring the situation for any changes that may affect travellers.”
