A number of countries in the Americas region are experiencing local transmission of Zika virus. These include: Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Suriname and Venezuela.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising pregnant women to "consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing" and those who are thinking about or trying to become pregnant "should consult with their healthcare provider before travelling".

International SOS recommends that pregnant women contemplating international travel consult a doctor for an individual risk assessment and advice as standard practice prior to any travel, regardless of destination.

International SOS members are encouraged to call their local Assistance Centre or visit the International SOS Member Zone for the latest information and to register for email alerts. Members are also encouraged to download the International SOS Assistance App.
