Japan: International SOS deploys team to Hokkaido island following damaging earthquake

07 September 2018 ,  —

Japan

International SOS has deployed an Incident Management Team to Hokkaido to assist clients in the wake of the earthquake which struck the island on 6 September, causing extensive damage as well as casualties.

Advice for travel to Hokkaido

Defer non-essential travel to Hokkaido until at least 8 September. Essential travel is viable only if members are confident in their travel logistics, such as transport and accommodation.

Members on essential travel should ensure robust journey management planning and maintain flexibility due to the risk of aftershocks, poor weather and movement restrictions resulting from relief operations. Liaise with local contacts and the authorities to confirm that routes are open and not blocked by debris or landslides, or closed due to traffic restrictions.

International SOS members should contact the Assistance Centre for support or pre-travel briefing covering safety preparations and the support required to ensure a trip is feasible.

For the latest information and advice, members are advised to register for email alerts and review the travel security updates on Travel Security Online and through the International SOS Portal.

We also advise clients and members to download the International SOS Assistance App, here.
